Sensor and Processor:
The advanced imaging system of the Sony a7C II is powered by a 33MP full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor, capable of capturing 4K 10-bit images at up to 30 fps or shooting at a maximum continuous speed of 10 fps with AF and AE using the mechanical or electronic shutter. The back-illuminated sensor structure provides increased resolution without sacrificing sensitivity, with an ISO range of 100-51200 expandable to ISO 50-204800 for low-light performance with minimal noise and wide dynamic range.
Autofocus and Image Stabilization:
The AI processing unit of the Sony a7C II enhances the camera's autofocus and image stabilization systems, ensuring smooth and sharp handling in any shooting condition. The camera's 759 phase detection points in photo mode and 495 points in video mode, covering 94% of the image area, are enhanced with AI-based real-time subject recognition and tracking performance. The AI processor also utilizes a new Human Pose Estimation autoexposure algorithm to prioritize exposure areas, improving overall exposure accuracy by 20%. Other autofocus features include focus bracketing up to 299 images with focus points shifted in sequence, low-light focus accuracy up to EV -4.0, focus breathing compensation, autofocus assist, focus mapping, and focus peaking during autofocus.
Image Stabilization:
The camera's 5-axis optical image stabilization system, which counteracts five different types of camera vibrations during handheld photo and video shooting, now offers seven-stop vibration compensation and is algorithmically optimized for precise detection and control down to a single pixel. The AI processing unit also enhances communication between the camera body and the lens, providing a more stable frame before shooting. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted ones, for critical images without encountering camera vibration blur.
Advanced Rendering:
For still photography, the a7C II offers a wide range of rendering and color compression options for optimal image quality and storage management, thanks to the introduction of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File) format. Users can also choose between Compressed and Lossless Compressed data options when shooting in raw. The AI processing unit also helps achieve better Auto mode exposure results, with algorithmic adjustments applicable for skin tone, backlit situations, and white balance. The same Creative Looks presets available for videos are also available for still image shooting, with user-defined configurations featuring eight adjustable parameters. For optimal photo viewing when connected to selected monitors and TVs, the a7C II now offers a Hybrid Log-Gamma mode designed for photos that provides accurate dynamic range in 10-bit HEIF format.
