The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Features a 4/3" sensor for capturing up to 4096 x 2160 DCI 4K images at rates up to 75 fps in a variety of codecs including Blackmagic Raw at several bit rates and various ProRes 422 options.
The Pocket Cinema Camera 4KВ has 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO up to 25,600 for HDR images and incredible low light performance. External controls give quick access to essential functions, while the large 5 inch touchscreen makes it easy to frame shots, focus accurately and change camera settings. Features include built in SD/UHS-II or CFast 2.0 recorders for Blackmagic RAW or ProRes recording as well as a USB-C expansion port for recording externally to disks, plus MFT lens mount, built-in microphones, XLR input, full sized HDMI, 3D LUT support, Bluetooth and more.
With the 6.6 update, the BMPCC 4K now offers up to 80 fps in a 2.8K raw mode for 4:3 anamorphic and up to 75 fps in a 4K raw mode in 2.4:1 widescreen. A 2x de-squeeze preview is available for 4:3 recording as well as a 1.33x de-squeeze option. Slow-motion rates up to 120 fps are available in 2.6K raw for Super16 lenses and in cropped Full HD. The 6.6 update makes operating easier with support for the Pocket Battery Grip and a built-in horizon level function.
Further 6.6 update features include support for additional languages, USB PTP control, customizable frame guides, an up to 8x pinch-to-zoom function, the ability to embed custom LUTs as metadata in Blackmagic Raw, and more. Videos are the future, indeed, they are the present. Our social network feeds are already flooded with a wide variety of clips, and although smartphones have achieved incredibly high quality, the most beautiful and special content is always made with more professional machines. This term is often synonymous with "expensive," but Blackmagic Design has a different idea in mind and with the new Pocket Cinema Camera 4K tries to change all the cards on the table.
The 4K can thus be an extremely efficient tool, perfect for a "prosumer" audience, i.e., one that is aware of the means and editing processes that follow after acquisition. The affordable price does not directly open the door to just anyone: a few minutes of recorded high-resolution footage is in fact equivalent to files of several Gigabytes (1 min in FHD at 60fps = 1GB), let alone 4K, which is also possible at 60fps. So you need the right storage media, appropriate PC/Macs, and dedicated software (see Adobe Premiere or Resolve Da Vinci) for editing.
It is not so "Pocket "178.1 mm in length is not small, as is 85.5 mm in width and 96 mm in height. The grip is very generous, perhaps too much so; you have to have large hands for maximum comfort, and if not, you lose something in the grip. The body is made of polycarbonate and carbon fiber composite, materials that help keep the overall weight down and certainly sin in touch-and-feel.The sweetest note is found at the rear, where BMD has recessed a giant, bright 5-inch touch display, which eases controls and gives better feedback on framing. It's just too bad it's fixed; a hinge or swivel mechanism would certainly have raised weight and size (a little), but brought huge benefits.
The manufacturer is aware of this limitation and postponed everything to remote use via app. The image sensor was made by Sony and is almost identical to the one mounted on the Panasonic Lumix GH5s, as the mirrorless boasts excellent low-light and dual ISO performance: it manages to give the maximum (13 stops) for values of ISO 400 and 3200, but as demonstrated in video the quality remains entirely acceptable even at ISO 6400-8000, with grain evident only above ISO 12800. Several recording formats are available, and this is where the 4K BMPCC makes the difference over direct competition: ProRes 422 HQ up to 118 MB/s and CinemaDNG RAW up to 272 MB/s.
With the latter choice, numerous DNG files are generated with 12-bit color depth, compressed or not at 3:1 or 4:1 with as many as 13 stops of claimed dynamic range. The best software for handling these kinds of files is certainly DaVinci Resolve 15.1, which the company provides free of charge in the sales package; with other platforms there may be some uncertainty.
